KUNG LAO

Kung Lao is a former Shaolin monk and member of the secretive White Lotus Society. His distant ancestor, a Shaolin monk also named Kung Lao, lost to Goro in the Mortal Kombat tournament held 500 years ago. His loss allowed the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung to take control of the tournament, and it has been corrupted ever since. Liu Kang, also a descendant of Kung Lao, defeated Shang Tsung and ended his control over Mortal Kombat. In retaliation, Shang had the Shaolin temple burned and the monks massacred. Devastated at the loss of his brothers, the grieving Kung Lao joined Liu Kang in his journey to the Outworld, to gain revenge on the monks' murderers. Kung Lao entered the tournament being held by Shao Kahn, Shang's master and the ruler of the Outworld. When Kahn was defeated by Liu Kang, Kung Lao returned to the Earth, satisfied that his brothers had been avenged.

When he returned to Earth, Kung Lao found that the White Lotus Society had disassembled in the wake of the Shaolin massacre. Kung Lao attempted to reunite the Society, but was stopped when Shao Kahn invaded the Earth. Once again seeking out Liu Kang, Kung Lao joined a band of Earth warriors who were fighting against Shao Kahn. Kung Lao fought fearlessly, and was believed to have been killed during one of the battles.
